Checking your transmission fluid can be difficult or confusing if you don't know exactly what you're doing.  Checking your oil is very straight forward comparatively (put your car in park, Shut it off, pop the hood, pull the dipstick, clean it off, dip it in to check the level).

Your transmission however requires a bit more know how.
  1. Make sure your car is running
  2. Set your parking break and put the car in neutral
  3. Pop the hood and find the transmission dipstick
  4. Remove the stick, wipe it off and replace it
  5. Remove the stick again to check the fluid level*

*If your vehicle has been running for more then 10 minutes then the fluid is hot and should have run up the stick accordingly.

There are different types of transmission troubles. Low levels of transmission fluid or transmission fluid leak is so far the most common type of transmission problem. Low levels of transmission fluid is caused by leaks in the transmission system itself. Torque converters and transmission can be the source of different types of transmission problems that can result in transmission damage or failure. We should visit a certified auto repair shop for transmission repair immediately after observing these types of transmission problems.

I think my transmission is going out. As you said here, I should probably check the fluid just to be sure. I'll follow your steps here and if it is low, I'll see about taking it to a mechanic.
